I find that so many people don’t understand the way life works. Not that anyone does, life is so complex and dynamic that it’d be hard for one person to fully understand the gamut of life.
When you think of hard times, who’s going to be there for you? It’s not an easy question to answer if you have not gone through hard times. How can you possibly expect a hard time to show you who’s truly yours? Hard times are difficult but they are also a rite of passage. If you haven’t gone through one, there’s a hidden meaning of life nestled between hard times.
Have you ever suffered such grave injustice at the hand of one person who was never remorseful nor apologized and you had to muster all the forgiveness in you to apologize, you the victim, and forgive them like nothing happened? If you haven’t gone through this motion, then you’re missing one of the depths of life. True life is lived when you forgive without cause.
When people try to find meaning or add substance to their life, they make the mistake of thinking money will give them that. The things that give your life meaning have nothing to do with money. It is why the richest people spent money on luxury, parties and go home to do drugs because they still feel empty. Their downward spiral starts from there and mostly never stops. Some of them take on seemingly nice causes to mask the search for meaning. I remember Tony Hsieh the founder of Zappos who despite all the money he had relocated to a trailer park and ended up drowning in drugs. There are so many examples of this yet people still chase after money and success as a marker for meaning.
This is why people don’t understand why Luigi Mangione will throw his life away by murdering someone in cold blood. I am surprised to see comments suggesting that his rich family background and prestige education should have made him satisfied. Those things don’t bring satisfaction. The journey for meaning happens in the mind; money does not move the mind, knowledge does. The right people who search for meaning do so by searching for knowledge and as they get illuminated, their mind find rest or cause.
There is no one set meaning for life. Everyone has an individual journey and trying to copy someone’s journey is robbing you and the world of your individuality and the opportunity to weave your unique strand into this tapestry of life.
